I recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix FZ38. Photoshop CS3 does not support Raw from this camera and available Plug ins only work with CS4.  I do not wish to purchase CS4 and am wondering if Photoshop Elements 7 would be a solution to this problem?

Hello, greetings & welcome.

The simple answer to your query is that the support you require is found, newly, in Adobe Camera Raw v5.6. This is compatible with Photoshop Elements - but why would you want v7 when v8 is available?

You haven't given us any idea of where you are located, but a free TRIAL download of Elements 8 for the UK is available at:-
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?loc=en_gb&product=photoshop_elements.
You need to create an Adobe account, also free, but then you'll get updates on products as & when available.

You could try it out for yourself and then let us all know for certain! Feedback adds to the knowledge base of the whole Forum and is strongly encouraged.

Good luck!

Dear Phil,
Thank you for your speedy response.  The reason for opting for Element 7 instead of 8 is purely financial!  I have been reading reviews about both but it appears that 8 does not have too many improvements over 7.  As an ex Yorkshire lass - now residing in Lancashire (I can hear the gasps of horror) I am obviously thinking about my pennies!  I have been watching Barry's tutorials on RAW and thought I would have a go but do not fancy using the software that comes with FZ38,

Hi Woodhall.

Heartfelt sympathy at your exile to the heathen wastelands west of Todmorden  Surprised - better than being south of Bawtry, though Rolling Eyes . Good to see that you've managed to retain the good, traditional Yorkshire values of "Short arms, deep pockets" - pennies saved are pennies available for going out taking pictures. Sixteen quids worth of petrol is far more use than features you don't need in an otherwise excellent programme - and you can always upgrade the programme afterwards while you can't go back to get the pictures you missed.

It seems that perhaps you are at the start of the fascinating journey through photography. Remember that there is a lot of knowledge on this Forum so if you get stuck (and you will), for goodness' sake ask. If we don't know the answer, we're sure to make something up which at least sounds plausible! I jest of course (about the making it up bit, not the asking for help).

Good luck and keep asking!

I have just received a copy of Elements 8, but my first look at it didn't show up any differences that are obvious.

There must be some, I need to delve further in

Hi there Woodhall
No gasps here. about changing the colour of your Rose, I did exactly the same as you. I went even further into the depths of Lancashire 30 years ago. I left Doncaster for Chorley, Ive never looked back.
Like Phil says so eloquently, dont be afraid to ask for advice.

It's easy - you can do it in Photoshop!   Laughing

You can, similarly, clone out your Lamborghini and insert a Reliant Robin. But who would want to?  d'oh!

Oops! I didn't mean to start another Battle of the Roses!
I have now sent off for Elements 7 - next question. Do I install the plug in 5.6 when I download it  following instructions in Barry's CS3 Camera Raw?

Ooooh 'Battle', Hell no it was all out WAR I wasn't there, nothing to do with me, but my Lancastrian friends often remind me, Woodhall.

Update to my Camera Raw query - I have now installed Photoshop Elements 7 on my PC and downloaded and installed the Plug in v 5.6.  I opened a photo taken in RAW so that works.  Now the hard work begins!
Thanks to the replies received. You will probably be hearing from me again!
